Birthstones are the perfect gift for someone special, or perhaps just for yourself.
Below is a guide to each birthstone:
January
Garnet - This red stone symbolises fire, faith, truth, grace and fidelity.
February
Amethyst - Greek legend states that Bacchus created this purple stone - anyone wearing it could not become intoxicated.
March
Aquamarine - It is stated that the ancient Greeks believe Aquamarine held the spirit of the sea. The early Christians believed it symbolised harmony, happiness, innocence, youthfulness and purity.
April
Diamond - Diamonds symbolise eternity and courage.
May
Emerald - Gem-quality emeralds are considered more valuable than diamonds as they are very rare. They were being mined as early as 2000 B.C. near the Red Sea.
June
Pearl - Pearls symbolise a pure heart.
July
Ruby - They are said to possess great powers. They may bring peace, harmony and health to life. They may also control one’s passions and thoughts.
August
Peridot - These stones were mined near the Red Sea around 1300 B.C. They are now found near Arizona and Asia.

Sapphire - It was thought, by the Persians that the earth rested on a large sapphire and the colour of the sky was reflected from it.

Opal - Opals are thought to bring emotional, physical and mental harmony - fire opals are said to encourage passion.

Topaz - It was called the ‘Stone of Strength’ by the ancient Greeks. It was believed to heal both physical and mental disorders in medieval times.
December
Turquoise - The Incas and Aztecs believed it brought good fortune.
